“Communication is the key to almost every issue that we face…. Either the lack of good communication—or good communication—determines the outcome.”

In this episode, Ronda Puryear shares her insights with Mindy Price about her career in the multifamily industry and experience as this year’s NAA Chair. Starting out as a part-time leasing consultant when her children were young, she credits great mentors for helping her to gain knowledge and move into positions of leadership in the industry. She takes great pride in her work with the NAA and is one of only four women who have held the position of Chair.

When asked about some of the biggest challenges she is facing in her roles today, Ronda notes a change in the mindset and demand of renters. She strives to take care of her onsite teams who face less tolerance and compassion from residents, and she notes the importance of clear and consistent communication in ensuring positive relationships. She also explains how some of the changes being proposed and imposed by the federal government are not always favorable to the industry, and why it’s important to have a voice through the NAA or political action committees in order to resolve problems.

Mindy and Ronda wrap their conversation by discussing advice for those who desire a career in the multifamily industry. Ronda emphasizes the importance of being curious, getting involved, having a voice, and pursuing mentors. She also shares resources that she uses to stay up to date on current trends and information, ranging from the NAA website, podcasts and training from supplier partners, and volunteering in the community with a mind open to learning from those in other industries.
