The 2025 J Turner Research Summit – The Butterfly Effect

Register for the Summit TODAY to learn what it takes to set a trend!

The countdown is on for the fourth J Turner Research Summit, bringing together leaders in the multifamily industry for three days of dynamic insights by high-demand speakers and camaraderie with peers in an elegant and luxurious resort hotel. The 2025 summit will be held October 15-17 at the stunning Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego, California. While this year’s location is new, one thing that will not change is the summit’s line-up of world-renowned speakers and out-of-the-box thinkers who will encourage senior management to adopt a non-traditional approach to daily operations and learn what it takes to set a butterfly effect in motion – start a trend that will propel your business to new heights!

Joseph Batdorf, co-founder and president of J Turner Research, is particularly excited about this year’s summit. He is consistently encouraged by the smart and strategic attendees of the previous summits who understand that their work is always about someone’s home—not merely an asset to generate income. Batdorf answered questions about what participants can expect from the 2025 event and why it would benefit leaders to attend.

What is special about the fourth J  turner research?

Batdorf: The big news is that this year’s keynote speaker is Malcolm Gladwell, one of the most well-known and requested speakers in the world. He is the author of seven New York Times bestsellers: The Tipping Point, The Revenge of the Tipping Point, Outliers, and David and Goliath, among others. Gladwell’s compelling stories and unique thought processes stick with people, encouraging them to ask questions they normally don’t ask themselves. The J Turner Summit attendees will get a sense of how Gladwell thinks, which might prompt senior management to take a different approach to improving their companies and elevating their interactions with residents to the next positive level.  Gladwell’s insights can illuminate how subtle shifts in operations, resident engagement, or market perception can create significant competitive advantages.

In addition to Gladwell, our high-demand speakers include:

  1. Ali Wolf, economist who returns for the second time to share her perspectives. Wolf’s session will provide valuable economic context, helping you navigate market uncertainties and plan effectively for the future.
  2. Crystal Washington, Technology Strategist and Futurist will also lead a session. Washington’s session will offer a roadmap to leverage technology for improved resident experiences, streamlined operations, and future-proofing your organizations.
  3. J Turner’s Research team will unveil never shared multifamily research and trends.

Each day’s lineup is carefully curated to be thought-provoking, inspiring, and relaxing—without any vendors or sales pitches!

What is the significance of this year's summit theme?

Batdorf: Our theme this year is The Butterfly Effect: Navigating Multifamily’s Tipping Point. The idea behind the butterfly effect states that when a butterfly flaps its wings, it builds momentum, which turns into a breeze, then a wind, and then maybe a hurricane. This effect connects to Gladwell’s query in The Tipping Point: What does it take to create a trend? In the apartment industry, you want to be on the leading edge of trends, so networking with your industry peers and listening to dynamic thinkers will help you determine where you need to focus your efforts over the next five years.

Why should a multifamily c-suite attend the summit?

Batdorf: While most conferences are made up of multifamily industry people sharing information that you may already know, our Summit is different. We bring in speakers from outside the industry to help leaders approach their thinking and business processes from a different angle. Our goal is for you to walk away from the Summit saying, ‘Geez, I never really thought about that.’ The Summit is limited to 200 attendees, comprised mostly of upper management. We want you to come away thinking that you learned something valuable!

What can attendees expect from the new venue?

Batdorf: We are excited for the summit attendees to experience something new! We searched high and low for a venue that would provide a beautiful and relaxing setting, and the Fairmont Grand Del Mar won out. It is a charming resort with a stellar reputation. And just as in years past, this is an all-inclusive event where the cost of your hotel stay is included in the price of the summit registration. Just remember that as we get closer and registration fills up, the price will increase—so get in early!

What are the biggest challenges that our industry is facing today?

Batdorf: When the market is tough, there is a propensity to react in a way that is not necessarily in your best interest in the years to come. Industry leaders need to work smarter and harder—and hire people who will work smarter and harder. Research has shown that centralization is not the way to go—residents want that human touch that reassures them that their problems will be solved. The insights gleaned from the high-impact speakers at our summit will help leaders prepare for these challenges.
